In the "saddest story ever" category, this little number from the New York Times is nominated.
A woman dies during a radio station contest. The prize was a Nintendo Wii. She was hoping to win it for her kids.
The contest? Drink as much water as possible without going to the bathroom.
She died of water intoxication.
Too High a Price for Wii? by Thomas Zeller for the New York Times.

The New York Times ran a travel article recently on my favorite place on the planet, Big Sur, California. When I lived in California, I was only a 20 minute drive north from this place, and trust me when I say I went as often as possible. I have yet in my life found a place as serene, as beautiful, as wholly fulfilling as those cliffs, those beaches, those trails. Just thinking about it now gives me chills.
Big Sur without the crowds by Gregory Dicum for the New York Times.
Honestly, it was like another planet. That's how awesome it was. Not to mention that along one of the hiking trails, you would come across some natural hot springs. You have not lived life until you skinny dip with a beautiful girl in some hot springs, then jump in a cool mountain creek afterwards. Every nerve ending on your body is heightened in sensitivity. Needless to say, bring a blanket.

Rob Wonder is a cat who I was able to meet on a few occasions when I lived down south. He usually was spinning at the hot spots in the ATL. When I moved back to Chicago, I got to see him again at Sonotheque during the Scion tour.
He just posted a new mix that is incredibly outrageously smooth. This is probably up there on my top ten list of mixes of the last six months. When you can mix Black Sheep into Stevie Wonder into Sergio Mendes, you got skillz.

Spotted this dope african hip hop mix over at Discobelle this morning. X Plastaz have a track in there.
If you didn't know, X Plastaz is my favorite Maasai hip hop group. I'm so serious. I know you're asking, "How do you know anything about Maasai hip hop?" Well, let me tell you.....My circle of friends has international surface area.

You know what's awesome? Instrumental indie music. Don't get me wrong....I love lyrics. But sometimes those floppy haired boys whine too much.
Ghosts & Vodka is an instrumental band made up of members from various other Chicago-area indie bands (Joan of Arc, Owls, and most recently, Make Believe). They are pretty good.

Nico B reminded me of the hotness of this track. I totally forgot I downloaded it a few weeks back. However, it was one of those days where I had about 10 new tracks and this one got lost somewhere on my desktop.
Crime Mob brings it on this, sampling everyone's favorite 90's club hit "What is love?" by Haddaway. I'm lookng forward to this album, even though they have a convicted child molester in the group. Killa C has since been kicked out, but he'll be on the album.

Of course, you knew this was going to happen. It was only a matter of time before someone was going to bring up Barack Obama's admission of past marijuana and cocaine use as a negative.
The Washington Post ran this article accentuating the possibility that his candor concerning his illicit past would come back to haunt him. This article has caused an avalanche of opinions and is bringing a lot of messy things to the surface.
Sometimes it doesn't pay to be honest.

Lil' Wayne's best mixtape so far. Try it out if you haven't given Weezy F. Baby a chance since before he started doing steroids.

Someone on a Gamespot Forum posted that Bungie Software, the makers of the Halo series for Microsoft, recently sent 24 XBOX360 dev kits over to Iraq for the soldiers to beta test Halo 3.
I have conflicting opinions about this. On one hand, it's a nice gesture to send the troops anything. We all know they need all the support they can get. Halo 3 is one of the most anticipated titles of the new year.
Conversely, how appropriate is it to send a multiplayer shooting game to soldiers entrenched in a war zone to test? Are they asking if the killing mechanics are "life-like" enough? Will this be somehow tied into a viral marketing campaign ["Battle Tested and Approved by America's Fighting Forces!"]?
Weird.

I don't know what they put in the water over there in Sweden but damn if they don't make some good music.

This is one of my favorite tracks of the last year. Just listen to the lyrics on the chorus:
You're a needy girl I can tell when I look in your big brown eyes
You Want my world but how can I do yours if I can't do mine
I Try to change but somehow it don't matter i dont feel the same
it's all about what you want what you say how you feel how you play the game
I'm so sure we know all about what he's singing.

This is a real nice mix that cuts a lot of classics over a short amount of time. Crazy fire.

It's been a few days, and I still can't believe James Brown is dead. The guy was probably one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.
Here is a crazy dope 10 minute mix of some of JB's greatest breaks. Download it. Bump it.

My girl Oprah opened a trill school for girls in South Africa yesterday. 52 acres, 28 buildings, state-of-the-art classrooms, computer and science labs and a library, theater and wellness center.
I love Oprah.
